Every year, during the first full week of February, therapists, educators, and families around the world celebrate International Play Therapy Week—a time dedicated to raising awareness about the life-changing impact of play in children’s mental health.
Spearheaded by the British Association of Play Therapists, this week shines a light on a powerful truth:
Play is a child’s natural language, and toys are their words.
For children who don’t yet have the vocabulary to explain trauma, anxiety, grief, or big emotions, play becomes the safest and most authentic way to communicate.
🧠 What Is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach used by trained mental health professionals to help children express feelings, process experiences, and develop healthier coping skills—through play rather than talk.
Unlike regular playtime, therapeutic play is guided by a credentialed clinician such as a Registered Play Therapist™ trained under standards promoted by the Association for Play Therapy.
Through tools like:
Sand trays
Dollhouses and figurines
Art materials
Puppets and storytelling
Role-play and games
children safely “act out” what they cannot yet say out loud.
🌟 How You Can Celebrate International Play Therapy Week
